We start by measuring and templating your countertops, then determining the best location for custom features such as drain boards and trivets (In blue tape).
We then fabricate an exact reverse mold (like a Jello mold) out of that template and incorporate the custom features. (Drainboard and trivet inlays shown) 4" welded wire mesh is used to reinforce the concrete High strength concrete is then mixed with pigment and additives to resist cracking and shrinkage then poured into the mold.
After 4 days of curing the piece is taken out of the mold and it sits for another 4 days to fully cure. Once this is done, the piece can be sealed and waxed. The pieces are then delivered and installed and waxed once again. |

Q: What makes concrete countertops so special? A: Concrete is organic, it has a special feel to it. From the first time people see it, they are surprised that concrete can look so good, they touch it and feel the texture. It has its place in a Modern kitchen, Craftsman kitchen or a Tuscan inspired kitchen. What separates it from all other countertops is the ability to be customized, no two countertops will look alike so no two fabricators will do the same work. People want to have something exclusive that their friends or neighbors don't have. In most new homes and kitchen remodels, granite is expected and has lost most of its value and appeal.
Q: Does concrete stain? A: A well cared for concrete countertop will resist stains. As with most porous surfaces, concrete will stain if not cared for. Concrete has approximately the same porosity as marble. Acids can etch the surface -- red wine, lemon juice, and vinegar especially. However, like aged butcher block or marble, a patina on a cast concrete product can actually enhance the character of the surface. Our non-toxic penetrating sealer and wax will help to resist stains, but are not acid proof. Cleaning up after spills is the best way to minimize staining and etching.
Q: What sort of routine maintenance is required to keep the finish? A: Projects that leave the shop have been sealed with a countertop penetrating sealer and waxed. A light buff with wax every few months will even out the surface by getting rid of fingerprints and will put a little kick back into the luster. If you need to clean a dirty countertop, just use a terry towel, warm water and a mild dish soap. Stay away from abrasive cleaners like Ajax, also Formula 409 or Simple Green.
Q: Are concrete countertops affordable? A: Concrete countertops are a custom-crafted material and made by designers and craftsmen. Different factors are used to price concrete countertops. Options such as thickness, irregular or curved shapes, cutting boards and drainboards, inlays, custom edges and back splashes affect the overall cost. Concrete is competitive in price with high end granite and other engineered countertop materials. We will work with you to give you an estimate on your project and help you with options to fit your budget.
Q: Buddy Rhodes Concrete and Cheng Designs Concrete, why do both methods and what's the difference? A: Although both mixes contain aggregate, sand, portland cement, admixtures and color, they're both totally different. The Cheng Pro Formula concrete has a more uniform color, solid and highly polished look compared to the Buddy Rhodes concrete that is a more rustic/marbled look that lends itself well to more traditional spaces. We fabricate our concrete using both methods because we realize that everyone has a different vision of what will fit their space and thus we can offer a varied look to their concrete surface.
Q: There are a number of custom concrete fabricators, how do I choose? A: The most important part of choosing your concrete countertop is choosing the right fabricator. Unlike granite or other materials where you see the finished product before it's cut or fabricated, the overall design and finish is dependent on the craftsmanship of the concrete artisan. Think of the fabricator as a painter. You wouldn't want to buy a painting from an artist without seeing any of that persons work or receiving a referral. Contact them all. Don't be afraid to ask to see the quality and detail of their work or ask for references or referrals. If they have a website, see if the work they have done interests you and they can work with the style you have chosen. This will be the focal point of your project so choose your fabricator wisely.
